Josefa and her younger brother Juan Angel are the children of single Mom, Bernalda. Josefa loves the peace and stability she has found at CDL, and because of the security she feels she has settled in very well to the CDL family. She has made friends quickly and is a very kind-hearted little girl. Her Mom Bernalda is originally from the southern Mexican indigenous state of Chiapas, but moved to Primo Tapia with her husband looking for work. Bernalda recently separated from her husband and came to CDL asking for help. When they arrived at CDL, Bernalda hadn’t been able to find work and was feeling very desperate about her and her children’s futures. After talking with Bernalda, we learned that though she doesn’t know how to read or write, she is very skilled at making tortillas. CDL then recommended that she go to the restaurant and tortilla store owned by CDL Mom Marilu to ask if she had any employment available. That very afternoon, Bernalda started working with Marilu, and has been there ever since. Finally, Bernalda and her children have the peace, support, and stability they’ve been looking for and they are able to start rebuilding their lives.
